There was a nice little post from @mashable today that I found very intriguing.

If your really interested, go on over there and read their spin, but basically, these innovations have the potential to change how we design and program web pages.

CSS3 has a nifty new feature, @font-face, that will allow most modern web browsers to display fonts that are stored on the server-side. This is different now, where the designer can choose a font, but must rely on the user having the font for it to display properly, so, typically, that means designers are limited to a small group of typefaces.

The catch of course, is that fonts are not free. Someone makes them, and someone licenses them, and that is where Typekit comes in. In May, the service Typekit was announced as a way to facilitate foundries and web designers to work together and offer more fonts for web page embedding. The service officially opened to the public last week.

How Typekit works is that you can subscribe to a monthly (or yearly if you prefer) plan to have access to Typekit’s font library of professional, fully licensed fonts for your websites. The price is pretty reasonable; the portfolio plan costs just $49.99 a year for access to Typekit’s complete library on up to five different websites. Today, Typekit has announced that they have partnered with FontFont, a well-respected and high quality font house. FontFont fonts like FF Meta, FF Speak and FF Netto are now available for Typekit users to embed into their sites.

I, for one, am looking forward to the ability to have more design options for my clients, but now there will be one more thing that I will have to explain, and one more thing they will have to pay for when that just have to have that shiny new font.
